"SHE REMEMBERED WHO SHE WAS AND THE
GAME CHANGED"
I think this sentence demonstrates an evolution from girl to woman in
realizing what, despite gender inequalities and all the added struggle, the
fact of being a woman will bring to her life, she has every right to make her
life as she wishes and dreams it.
When we reach a stage in our lives as human beings and really realize that we
can be whoever we want, do whatever we want, and conquer whatever our heart
desires, we grow in maturity and mainly as individuals because we end up
putting our future and who we are ahead of everything else. This ‘everything
else’ includes all the socio-cultural, demographic, ethnic, and other cultural differences.
Even today, in 2023, at university I still hear that one course is more
masculine than another, and I see how the students themselves, mostly from a
generation born with change happening in so many areas, are the first ones to
create these inequalities within their courses.
Today, in the middle of the 21st century, in the middle of a class I still hear
sexist comments coming both from professors and students - how long will we, as
a society, let these jokes pass and not only bring no good to the situations in
which we find ourselves? We have grown so much in so many areas as a society,
but when are we going to remain stagnant in a way of thinking that only
values one part of society? When did we lose the sense of growing as
individuals and society?
I believe that change only exists when each of us truly lives what we believe
and not just follow society or what we have been taught. Many of us must cut
out ways of thinking, emotions and opinions that were imposed on us as children
and teenagers as children and teenagers!
